Beach Access Road Encroachment (Multi-Site ECC Investigation)

Background

SCRA compiled a report on the blocking and encroachment of beach access roads at multiple sites, including Mvureni, Mwaepe (KFI), Bidi Badu, Kongo Mosque, Southern Palms, and stone quarrying sites in Tiwi affecting the Kaya Tiwi sacred site.

Actions Undertaken

SCRA organised a joint site visit with the national Environmental Complaints Committee (ECC) on 27 February 2021, walking the committee through each site alongside representatives from the county commissioner's office, Fisheries, and the Kwale planning office.

Progress Updates

  • 1 January 2023NECC follow-up visit to Diani and Tiwi produced strong recommendations on encroachment and illegal stone mining; SCRA is pursuing these with NECC and Kwale County Government alongside KARA.
  • 27 February 2021ECC committed to a formal report and recommendations to the Cabinet Secretary for Environment within two weeks.
