The SCRA Secretariat has reached out to the NTSA Coast Regional Manager regarding new inspection regulations under the Traffic (Motor Vehicle Inspection) Rules 2026 (Legal Notice 13 of 2026). While the rules were legally slated to commence on 1 July 2026, SCRA has been notified that the rollout will be gradual, with due notice given to the public.
Under the new regulations, private vehicles older than four years will require an annual inspection test, while all public service vehicles, commercial vehicles, and school vehicles must be inspected annually regardless of age. Testing will be supported by licensed private testing centres, with a standard fee structure of a Ksh 1,000 NTSA booking fee plus a maximum Ksh 1,000 centre inspection fee for vehicles under 3,000cc. Vehicles that fail inspection will receive a defect report and a 14-day window for free re-inspection after repairs.
