Background
SCRA opposed sand harvesting off the South Coast carried out for the second phase of the Kenya Ports Authority port expansion project, citing threats to reefs and beaches.
Actions Undertaken
SCRA organised public demonstrations, raised awareness of the risk to reefs and beaches, and took KPA and NEMA to court over non-compliance with environmental legislation. A temporary suspension of the harvesting was secured pending mitigation measures.
