Background
A sand dredger contracted for railway construction material began operating close to Diani's reefs, raising concerns about damage to coral, diving sites, mangroves, fisheries, and the beach itself.
Actions Undertaken
SCRA pushed for a stakeholder workshop that drew over 300 attendees including fishermen, marine scientists, government representatives, and KWS. When the project proceeded regardless, SCRA took the matter to court.
Progress Updates
- 22 January 2016Court ruled in SCRA's favour; the dredging operation was ordered to leave the South Coast.
