Background
Mrima Hill, gazetted as a forest reserve in 1961 and recognised as a sacred Kaya site in 1992, was the subject of a mining proposal with an Environmental Impact Assessment that SCRA and partner organisations considered inadequate.
Actions Undertaken
SCRA reviewed the EIA in detail and, together with Colobus Conservation, WWF, the Kenya Forest Forum, and the Kwale County Natural Resources Network, raised concerns at a NEMA workshop and with the Director General of NEMA and the Kwale County Governor — particularly around unaddressed radiation risk to a population of over 44,000 people within a 250km radius.
